The Oakland Raiders have reached out to free agent quarterback David Garrard after Jason Campbell suffered a broken collarbone in Sunday's victory, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Garrard and his agent, Al Irby, plan to discuss the situation and get back to the Raiders on Monday afternoon, the source said. Free agent Josh McCown also has been contacted by Oakland.

Garrard turned down an opportunity with the Miami Dolphins because they wouldn't guarantee his salary but he made it clear in an interview with ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen earlier this month that he is not retired.

"There's been a lot of speculation about me that I don't appreciate," Garrard told ESPN. "I was going to lay low with the media but I feel I have to protect my name. I just want to make it clear that I'm a football player, I want to be with a team and be with an organization that will be as committed to me as I will be to them."

Campbell landed hard on his shoulder after being hit at the end of a scramble by Cleveland Browns linebackers Chris Gocong and Scott Fujita with about 4 minutes remaining in the half. Campbell stayed down on the turf after the hit and was then helped to the locker room.

Tests determined that he broke his collarbone. He is scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday.

"I'm not going to let this football team blink," coach Hue Jackson said after a 24-17 victory. "We'll miss Jason for a little while. I have no idea how long it will take. I don't know. We'll see as we go. I know, obviously, he won't be here next week or anything like that. We'll continue to press forward and get better."

A source told's Bill Williamson that Campbell is expected to be out for the remainder of the season.

Campbell was replaced by Kyle Boller, who went 8 for 14 for 100 yards in his first action of the season.

"I felt very comfortable," Boller said. "I probably was a little bit quick in the beginning. Wish I could slow my feet down a little bit, but that's part of it. I felt like in the second half I got more comfortable each play, and even in the last couple drives it felt good."

The only other quarterback on Oakland's roster is rookie Terrelle Pryor, who will be activated Monday. Pryor got a one-week roster exemption after serving a five-game suspension to start his career.

A source familiar with the team's thinking told Yahoo! Sports on Sunday that the Raiders were "trying hard" to land quasi-retired Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer. However, the source also told Yahoo! that it was doubtful Bengals owner Mike Brown would trade Palmer. Brown has been staunch in his public belief that Palmer has retired from the NFL and has said on multiple occasions he has no plans to deal the disgruntled signal-caller.

The Denver Post also reported Monday that the Denver Broncos would be willing to trade demoted quarterback Kyle Orton to the Raiders for a draft pick if the Raiders were interested.

Campbell has completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 1,170 yards with six touchdowns and four interceptions this season. Campbell is in the final year of his contract. ... ource-says

Oakland Raiders: Kyle Boller Can Lead This Team to Playoffs

by Rich Langford on Oct 17, 2011 6:30 AM PDT

No one wanted to see Kyle Boller under center this season for the Raiders. Jason Campbell was playing as good of football as he has at any time in his career. Yet that very fact tells me this team can succeed even with Boller chucking the pigskin.

Campbell's success was as much a function of this offense as his skill.

He was playing solid, but certainly not fantastic. He created a couple of nice plays"one to Michael Bush deep against the Jets, and one on the Schilens' TD against the Texans"with awareness and using his feet, but other than that he was just running the offense.

Campbell is not the type of QB that is going to go through reads to beat a defense. His success came from good playcalling and plenty of good targets to throw to, and that was all made easier by a fantastic running game and solid pass protection.

In other words, Kyle Boller simply has to become fluid in this offense and the Raiders will not suffer much of a dropoff. And, this offense may actually improve in one huge area. Jump over for more....

Jason Campbell has been horrid on deep passes. In fact, he was ranked 33rd in deep pass completion percentage heading into the Browns game. Kyle Boller can easily improve on this.

This was not the end of the season

Like I said earlier, Boller needs to work on becoming fluid in this offense. This means making quick and smart decisions. QB guru Al Saunders will be there to help him every step of the way with this.

Boller's performance filling in for Campbell was certainly nothing to write home about on Sunday, but it wasn't horrible either. Let's review:

Boller had two bad passes. Both were amazingly horrid, and both were on deep outs. One to Denarius Moore and one to DHB. These were the only two deep outs he attempted. He has to get better at these. He has the arm strength. Hopefully, repetitions with the starting receivers will help.

Two incompletions were drops on decent passes. One to Ford and one to Tonga. He had one throw away. And his only other incompletion came on the first drive of 4th quarter and that was just a blatant miscommunication.

The rest of his passes were on point.

He had a wonderful deep pass to Schilens on the first drive of the second half. The ref ruled it out of bounds, but it wasn't. Schilens made a great grab, and easily had both feet in. It didn't matter. Satele held on the play.

Boller showed off awesome escapability after Coope Carlisle whiffed on a block. He may have a slight edge on scrambling over Campbell, who was a decent scrambler. And although I can't recall ever seeing Boller slide, I am just going to go ahead and say he is WAY BETTER at it than Jason.

Also, Boller starting undoubtedly makes Mrs. Boller happy"and a better candidate for airtime"that has to count for something right? ... yle-boller

Take one name out of search for QB, David Garrard just called me and told me he needs immediate surgery on herniated disc in his back.

Garrard has been in a ton of pain for from training camp injury and MRI showed herniation of L4-L5. Says he wanted to be upfront w OAK!/JayGlazer

I would definitely want to keep Mrs Boller happy. But with the Palmer trade, Kyle likely gets one more game as a starter, then we have the bye week. After that it becomes the Carson Palmer era.
